Titanium CNC Machined Components for a High-Performance Equipment Maker

Case 2022-06-14

Project Type: Custom Titanium CNC Machining (OEM) Material: TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) Titanium Alloy
Project Overview
We machined high-performance titanium components for an equipment manufacturer whose application required the strength-to-weight ratio of TC4 titanium: thin-wall parts, fine internal threads, and tight tolerances for weight-critical assemblies. All parts were machined, inspected, and documented in-house — no subcontracting.
The Challenge
Titanium is one of the most difficult materials to machine. Its low thermal conductivity traps cutting heat at the tool edge, causing rapid tool wear, work hardening, and surface tears. Thin-wall sections are prone to distortion, and fine threads are easily damaged. The customer had previously experienced rejected parts and unreliable delivery from suppliers who treated titanium like ordinary steel.

Their requirements were strict:

  1. TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium — chosen for high strength, low weight, and corrosion resistance
  2. ±0.02 mm tolerance on critical mounting and locating features
  3. Thin wall sections down to 1.2 mm without distortion
  4. Fine threads (M3-M5) — clean, fully formed, no tearing
  5. Full material traceability — certificate with every batch

Our Process

  1. Process planning: Dedicated titanium tooling and conservative cutting parameters, with high-pressure coolant to control cutting temperature and prevent work hardening
  2. Clamping design: Custom soft jaws engineered to hold thin-wall sections without distortion during machining
  3. Two-stage machining: Roughing removed the bulk of material first, followed by a dwell period to relieve stress, then finishing passes to hold final geometry
  4. Thread verification: All threads checked with calibrated go/no-go gauges
  5. Final inspection: Critical dimensions measured with CMM; every part checked for surface tears, burns, and edge quality
  6. Traceability: Heat number and material certificate recorded and shipped with the batch

Quality Control

  • Material certificate (EN 10204 3.1) and heat number traceability on every batch
  • CMM dimensional report covering all critical features
  • 100% visual inspection for surface defects
  • Produced under our ISO 9001 quality management system
  • The Result
  • The customer received parts with zero distortion on thin-wall features, clean fully-formed threads, and uniform surface quality across the entire order. Their assembly team reported zero fit issues, and the components passed field performance tests without a single failure. Thanks to the predictable quality and full documentation, the customer now treats us as their first choice for new titanium projects, and titanium has become a growing share of our orders.
