Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication — Precision Enclosures for a Machine Builder
Case 2022-06-14
Project Type: Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication (OEM) Material: SPCC Cold-Rolled Steel / Galvanized Steel Process: Laser Cutting → CNC Bending → Welding → Surface Finishing
Project Overview
We fabricated custom steel enclosures and sheet metal parts for a machine builder who needed made-to-print cabinets: precise laser-cut openings, accurate bends, clean welds, and a durable finish. Every step — cutting, bending, welding, and finishing — was completed in our own workshop, with no subcontracting.
The Challenge
The customer was shipping production equipment with standard off-the-shelf enclosures that never matched their layouts. Every cabinet required extra machining at their own site: cutouts for displays, switches, and cable entries had to be drilled and filed by hand, adding days of labor to each machine and delaying deliveries.
Their requirements:
- Custom cutouts — up to 28 openings per cabinet (displays, switches, cable glands, vents), positioned per drawing
- Consistent bend accuracy — door panels must align perfectly after assembly
- Clean welded seams — ground smooth, no sharp edges
- Durable finish — corrosion protection for industrial environments
- Protection level — IP54 or better on the finished cabinet
Our Solution

Our Process
Step 1 — Laser Cutting: All panels were cut on a fiber laser cutting machine in a single pass, with all 28 cutouts positioned to ±0.1 mm. This eliminated the customer’s secondary drilling and filing entirely — openings for displays, switches, and cable entries came out of our workshop already finished.

Step 2 — CNC Bending & Welding: Panels were bent on a CNC press brake with back-gauge positioning for repeatable, accurate angles. Door frames were checked for squareness before welding. Argon arc welding produced clean, strong seams, which were ground smooth and finished to remove any sharp edges.

Step 3 — Surface Finishing & Final Check: Cabinets were e-coated first for corrosion protection, then powder coated to a uniform 60-80 μm film. Each cabinet went through a final assembly check: door fit, hinge alignment, cutout positions, and coating quality. Visible panels were protected with film before packing.
Quality Control
- Laser-cut position accuracy ±0.1 mm, verified against the drawing
- Bend angles checked with calibrated angle gauges
- Coating thickness measured with a thickness gauge at multiple points
- Salt spray test 240 hours — no red rust
- Produced under our ISO 9001 quality management system; inspection report included with shipment
The Result
The customer removed the 3-4 day secondary machining step from their own production line completely, and enclosure lead time dropped from 3 weeks to 10 days. Door alignment and cutout accuracy passed on the first machine and stayed consistent across the series. They now order enclosures for every new machine model, and the standard process has been adopted across their whole product range.
